Thermal transfer overprinters (TTOs) work by melting ink from a ribbon and onto the substrate. The ink ribbon may be made of wax, resin, or a combination of the two.

Wax ribbons are a prime choice for printing onto paper. The resulting labels can remain readable for years on end. Meanwhile, resin is engineered for vinyl, polyester, and polypropylene. It produces durable labels that are resistant to water, oil, and chemicals. There are also wax-resin hybrids which combine economy and durability.
